Pottery Shard

Here is an old piece of pottery found in a stream. I am guessing it part of an old crock pot used on farms in the past for storage and cooking.

Cat Tails

Moss Underwater in Stream

Used Photoshop to reduce glare/reflection on water surface to bring out color and detail of moss. It was a brisk flowing stream that kept the strands of moss moving in the water. The intense greens in the moss caught my eye. Also the fine hail like texture of the moss was interesting as it clung to the rocks the water was flowing past.

Plant Underwater in Stream

It is still winter here and finding any green plants that are not evergreens is rare. So I found a group of plants growing underwater in a stream, it intrigued me. They sort of remind me of lettuce. The light bands caused by the rippling water. Photoshop was used to reduce some reflection and glare on the water's surface.

Bradford Pear Tree Split in Two by Ice Storm

Here is a Bradford Pear tree that got split in two by ice storm weeks ago. It is some sad because there is a row of these trees and that is the third one to be destroyed by bad weather in the last year.

I have planted some peach trees near these Bradford Pears that I hope will do okay. Cicadas attacked them last year and I hope they will now survive the winter.

Venus at Sunset

The subject is not so exciting in this photograph but all the shades of blue caught my eye. So I took a 10 second exposure shot with the tripod.

Venus is bright but it also seems like a fuzzy white blob in the telescope eyepiece when I look at it.

Holly Leaves

Such a nice green color with the waxy texture of the holly leaves. The green and red of this plant go so well together.

Evergreen Branches

Here is a bluish-green set of branches found in a flowerbed outside a house.

Holly Berries

Here are some color coming forth on from the winter surroundings. It looks like holly berries in the Christmas colors of red and green.

Shriveled Dogwood Tree Berries

I am use to seeing these berries as bright red but winter has turned them black and shriveled. They sort of look like miniature prunes. Maybe the birds or deer will consume them and spread their seeds across the landscape.

Waiting for Spring

Here is a bud of a tree but I am not sure what species. It is a bud waiting to open so it can bring its color to a new season of springtime.

Face of an Angel

Here is a concrete planter that has a mold of angelic face on it. I thought it would make a good picture.

Bradford Pear Bud in Ice

Here is the bud of a Bradford Pear tree in ice. I was trying to catch a drop in mid air as it fell from the tip of the icicle but was not patient enough.

Louisville Science Center - Whose DNA? Experiment

I helped with a BioLab at the Louisville Science Center that was teaching some high school students about DNA.

They learned about DNA as the basic building blocks of life and then how to use a pipette. They then loaded polarized dye into wells in a gel pack in this tray. The case was closed up and then 125 V DC was applied for about 15 minutes.



Here is one of the trays powered up and processing two of the four groups samples.



Here are the finished product of the four groups. Each sample was given two columns and there were three samples A, B, and C. A and C are the same and they paths match.

Hodgenville, Kentucky Birthplace of President Lincoln

Here is a picture of the round about in the center of Hodgenville, Kentucky that as several statues of President Lincoln and a museum seen in the right of this photograph.

Hodgenville is about a 60 minute drive south of Louisville, Kentucky and a very nice place to visit.

This is a picture of a statue of President Abraham Lincoln that resides in the town square in Hodgenville, Kentucky. It is important because this is the area where President Lincoln was born 200 years about today.

It was taken on a cold Thanksgiving morning in 2008 with a Canon Powershot Pro1.

Young Lincoln

Here is a statue that is in the town round about in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Hodgenville is the area where President Abraham Lincoln was born and there is a nice park there to commerate that fact.

It was said that he would walk for miles to borrow books to read. I suppose this is what he is holding a book in his hands.

Rhododendron

A picture from May 2007 of a rhododendron flower. According to the Internet, the name is a combination of two Greek words: rhodos meaning "rose" and dendron meaning "tree".

The storm that has descended on Louisville has brought snow and now ice. It appears to be melting but more snow appears on the way.

Ice Coating a Peach Limb

This peach tree limb tip is encased in ice after a storm has passed through Louisville.

Dehydrated Plastic Medallion

Here is a special type of plastic that can be dehydrated. When the water is extracted it contracts into a smaller shape. In this case, this drawing of a dinosaur contracted into a smaller shape that can be used as a medallion. It is a pretty neat process and people can buy a product like this in the store called Shrinky Dinks.

Sundog

A sundog that showed up in Carroll County, Kentucky.

Conularia

Here is an ancient sea creature I am trying to draw. It is called a Conularia and existed in the Mississippian Period. It is not known what it actually looked like some thought it might be some sort of jellyfish that floated around. Specimens have been found where the tip or apex had a stem on it. So it might have been like a crinoid with tentacles.

Flexicalymene Trilobite

Here is an Ordovician trilobite I found on a KYANA Geological Society field trip (www.kyanageo.org). My cousin has recently finished sandblasting it to reveal more detail.

The trilobite was called a Flexicalymene from the Ordovician Period. It is approximately 2 cm in length.
