Fossil Festival at Falls of the Ohio State Park

Every year the Falls of the Ohio state park in Clarksville, Indiana has a fossil festival. This year I got to volunteer there for the KYANA Geological Society and it was a great time. I think over 300 people participated in our educational activity and hopefully learned some things about geology and paleontology.

I a firm believer in the African violet growing container which is a double container, ones holds water and the main container is suspended into it allowing the plant to have access to water all the time. It is a great invention and has been working for this plant for years.

The pots are not cheap though, probably $8 or so at Home Depot.

Electricity and Why We Love It

Here in Louisville, Kentucky a wind storm generated by what was left of hurricane Ike brought havoc to the local tree community. About 300,000 homes lost power and once you lose electricity for a while, ouch, you miss it.

THANK YOU to LG&E (Louisville Gas and Electric) for getting our power restored in about 42 hours. Actually, they restored it about 23 hours but it went off after 4 hours and stayed off another 15.

The big things were refrigeration and cooking. Next would be using the computer and cordless phones. Lights are great to have at night along with the garage door opener.

I found out the dynamo charger for my cell phone does not work to well. So I think I will buy a new dynamo and use this experience as motivation to get my solar array finished so it can be used as a battery charger.

The dynamos on the radio and the little LED flashlight did work pretty well.

Union Civil War Musket Bullet

I was testing the camera's macro mode and found this American Civil War bullet I bought at a battlefield as a child decades ago. It might have come from somewhere in western Kentucky or Tennessee. I am pretty sure it was a Union one and Confederate ones were more spherical.

Flower Seen in Downtown Louisville

Here is a picture of flower I saw in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It was growing next to the sidewalk and popped right in an evergreen plant.

Groundcover Flower

Here is a ground cover plant that I really like the shape of its small leaf and the fullness sort of succulent like.

I have never seen it flower and here is one small flower that is out of focus but decided to post the picture just to have it on record.

Yellow Carnation

Here is a yellow carnation or at least it looks like one growing in the garden.

Tomato Harvest

The tomato harvest is about over but it has been a good one.

I have used some of the tomatoes and onions from the garden to make chili. Also tomato salads with cottage cheese and mayonnaise. Also putting the tomatos in garden salads with lettuce and carrots.

Flowers Still Blooming

The flowers are not blooming like they once were but here is a nice one that lots of shades of orange, yellow and pink.

Largest Watermelon Picked This Season

Here is a Charleston Gray watermelon picked several days ago weighing in at over 30 pounds.

It is maybe the third one picked this season.

Watermelon Processing

Here are some pictures showing the processing of the watermelon.

First it is cleaned and weighed.

Next is sliced open and cut into four sections.

The four sections are one at a time cut into smaller pieces and the seeds are removed. The juice is drained off into a glass. The pieces are stored in plastic containers to be refrigerated.

The rinds are left to drain and then used in compost.

Red Flower on Main St. Louisville Kentucky

After volunteering at the Louisville Science Center this last weekend, I visited the Frazier History Museum since it was free admission. It is a nice place but since it was closing soon after I got there, my exploration was very limited.

After that, I walked around Main Street and took some pictures. Here is one of a vibrant red flower that caught my eye and camera lens.
