Geology Field Trip to Bedford, Kentucky

Recently, I got to go on a geology field trip to Bedford, Kentucky to collect snails or gastropods. It was fun though it was hot and sunny. Also the weeds were making my allergies flare up. Found lots of neat fossils and here are some pictures of some.

Keeping my streak alive of finding some trilobite piece on my last 5 outings. This trip was extra nice in the the upside down flexicalymene trilobite that is about 50% there. Also found at least 5 other trilobite pieces.

On the way back home, the fire department of Bedford was collecting money at the stop light for the WHAS Crusade for Children so I gave the firefighter some money. His face was really red I assumed from being out in the sun for hours and hours so I gave him the rest of my 50 level sunblock. I hope he was able to use it because that looked like quite a sunburn. The sunblock packet came from the Louisville Mayor's ride so it was good I could pay it forward with them giving it to me and I able to give to someone else.

Final Cephalopod Render

My class is over and one of the renders I used was this one. After doing some more research this week, I would change the two squid tentacle arms to 2 regular length ones to make 10 of the same type of arms. Also I would add a fleshy hood to the top of the body to keep more like the diorama protrayals in museums.

My Rendering

It is coming along but still not finished. The semester is winding down with some finals already taken and one left plus two final project presentations.
Plus more work outside of that so I gotta keep truckin!

More fossil pictures

These fossils have been posted before or at least two of them. The pictures are new and I was using a tripod with sunlight and an incandescent bulb to take pictures.

The images are of a dawsonoceras cephalopod, crinoid calyx, and blastoid head.

Cephalopod Render

Okay, I am making progress on the rendering the cephalopod. Learned some new techniques in making arms and shaping the head. Made another eye that looks like it has a cataract but I am making progress.

Concept Idea of Cephalopod Look

Here is Autodesk Maya render of a cephalopod. I created one arm then replicated it across the the body just to make the model more complete it does but the creature looks very stiff and artificial.

Maya Cephalopod Shell

I have been working on the body of the cephalopod so I made a few texture changes and made this render of the shell. The UV mapping of a Photoshop image to the arms is not going so well for me. It comes down to how good are you at teaching yourself.

Cephalopod Render

For my next class project render, I am working on a cephalopod. This particular cephalopod is classified as Dawsonoceras. I guess for the ridges in its shell.

Here is an early render of the shell.

Something Attached to Cephalopod Fossil

If you look closely at the photo below, you will see a wire like blackish item attached to a ridge on this cephalopod shell fossil.

I think it might be the base of crinoid that never got beyond being very small. There appears to be remants of another one a little higher up from the first one in the photo as well.
