Peach Pie

The peaches I picked (shown in an earlier blog post) have now been turned into a pie. This simple recipe yields a tasty dessert. Ingredients include cut peaches, peach flavored jello, sugar, corn starch, and a pre-made pie crust.

Peach Harvest June 2012

I am pretty happy with the harvest this year. For trees that do not have any herbicides, fertilizer, or pesticides the fruit looks pretty good. My estimate is that this is about 30% of the fruit on the trees. Another 10% or so is being eaten by animals or is diseased.

Peaches and Jello

The peaches shown in an earlier posting now have been peeled and cut up.

After cutting up the peaches, Peach Jello is mixed up using boiling water and cold water.

Added the cut peaches to the jello in the bowl.

Last picture shows peaches in jello after being refrigerated for 12 hours.

Peaches

I harvested 10 peaches from the one of the three trees that produced this year.  In the beginning of the growing season, there were a lot more peaches on all the trees but these were the ones that made it to the finish line.  I found two on the ground that some animal(s) had eaten on.  Maybe a squirrel, rabbit, or chipmunk had eaten the exposed part of the peach down to the pit.  It looked ripe so I decided time to pick.

More pictures posted when they are cut up and used in peach jello.

Peaches

Small peaches are falling off my trees so I hope the seeds will be viable.

Peaches

Small peaches growing on fruit trees in the back yard.  I am guessing the trees were about 5 years old when I planted them so they are now about 7.  What I did not realize was I should be thinning the fruit on each tree so it does not get overtaxed by the fruit.  Each tree appears to have at least 15 peaches on them.

The peaches are about the sizes of plums but appear to be ripening so it might be too late to thin their ranks.

First Peach Blossom of 2010

First peach blossom of the 2010 year in Louisville, Kentucky.  Whether it leads to any fruit, time will tell.  Hopefully, the squirrels will not steal it.

Peach Flower Bud

Here is an early flower on the peach tree. It seems to have dark pink color.

The Lone Peach

This is the only peach to make it to ripeness. Among the three peach trees, there were 5 peaches but the others rotted or fell off the trees before getting ripe.

Peaches

One of the little peach trees has two peaches on it. They are not huge but the tree is quite small. The peaches are about the size of walnuts right now.

It looks like the top picture is starting to ripen.

Now Thats Just Peachy

As I commented in the last post, here are some very small peaches forming on the tree. In that first picture the largest peach is probably comparable to a quarter and the other to a dime.

Peach Blooms

The peach tree is continuing to provide blooms into our winter season. My cousin suggested I pollinate some of the blooms since the bees are in hibernation right now. So I took an ear swab and brushed it across the flowers several weeks ago.

They have such beautiful pink flowers.

Yesterday, I noticed some small peaches forming on some of the branches. There will be some pictures of these later in the week.

More Peach Flowers

The tree now seems to have 7 or so flowers and about 5 leaves open up. The weather today is rainy but the temperature could get to 70 F. It is neat to see the flowers but I hope I did not mess up the tree's cycle by bringing it in doors.

Peaches in January?

Yikes! I messed up by leaving the peach tree in the sun room too long. I did not want it to freeze outside since it is still in a container but I left the temperature to warm in the room and now it thinks its spring. Here is a picture of its only blossom and the next picture shows some leaves coming out.
